Many students often consider junior year to be the hardest year of high school until they go into their senior year. Obviously senior year is supposed to be the ‘fun year’ where students can enjoy and make memories at events like Senior Sunrise, Homecoming, and Prom. But before they can think about all those exciting events, they have to first decide what they want to do after high school. Most students consider going to college which leads to applying for colleges and writing college essays.

When applying for colleges, students often use The Common App. The Common App helps simplify the college admissions process by allowing students to submit their applications to colleges all in one place.

“With the Common App, you write a single personal essay that’s sent to all the colleges on your list. This saves you time and effort. It allows you to focus on crafting a strong essay that highlights your unique experiences and strengths. Some colleges may require supplemental essays, which can also be managed through the Common App” College Board said.

After students have an idea of where they want to go, they have to submit their transcript. Transcripts are usually found early September on Home Access Center. All students who are considering going to college have to use School Links to submit transcripts in order for counselors to know what colleges will be receiving student transcripts.

The next step is writing the college essay. College essays can also be known as a personal statement, they allow the writer’s audience to know a different side of students that is not associated with grades or test scores.  Most students start writing essays during the summer after junior year but if students take English IV during senior year, they would get the opportunity to write their college essay in class. College essays contain a narrative and a reflection. It should let the audience know who students are as people.

“One of the most memorable personal essay topics could be a setback or failure that helped you understand what it truly means to succeed. If you face a personal or academic challenge, explore how it forces you to rethink your priorities, discover new strengths, or develop resilience. These types of essays give admissions officers a deeper look into your character and perseverance” St. John’s University said.

College essays and transcripts are the primary requirement for college applications. Other things like ACT/SAT scores and letters of recommendation are all optional unless it is required by the specific colleges.
