After a season filled with hard work, discipline and arguably the most successful class to walk the hallways, Plainfield North’s marching band officially closed out its 2025 competition season. This season marked another year of growth and pride for the program.

The band placed as state finalists once again, continuing a legacy that has now spanned four consecutive years. Their most notable achievement came mid-season, when the Tigers earned the Grand Champion title at Prospect’s Night of Champions, breaking a streak of difficult losses in recent years.

Senior brass section member Carson Payne reflected on the team’s perseverance and what the milestone meant for their class.

“My immediate reaction was pure joy,” Payne said. “Not only had we beaten our rivals, but our senior class became arguably the most successful class our band has ever had. Four-time state finalists, two-time fourth place, and one state championship title for our class all come together to make an incredibly memorable experience for us all.”

The band’s improvement was not easy. For fellow members, this successful season brought with it longer rehearsals, increased repetition and higher standards across all sections.

“There was a lot of repetition of drill this year, which was quite tiring, I’ll be honest,” Payne said. “However, I believe that repetition is exactly why our show was so successful; even this year’s freshmen were performing at the levels of upperclassmen because of how rigorous we trained.”

As the season came to a close, maintaining focus became one of the band’s biggest challenges but also one of its greatest learning experiences.

“Our biggest problem as a trumpet section was focus,” Payne said. “As our season was nearing its end, we started to lose interest in the show, which ultimately led to sloppy mistakes. There was no easy solution, but a lot of section members would find their focus by also goofing around an equal amount. The fun parts balanced out the boring parts and made our section more focused.”

For Payne and the rest of the senior class, performing at state one final time was a statement of how hard they had worked for the past 4 years.

“Performing at the state level is such a privilege for us,” Payne said. “I literally cried while we performed on that field; an entire season’s worth of effort all culminates into the most amazing eight minutes of your life.”

North’s marching band not only reinforced its reputation as one of Illinois’ strongest programs this year but also proved that perseverance, teamwork and passion can truly make history one performance at a time.
