The senior girls’ powderpuff team has won once again in this annual flag football game between the juniors and seniors, continuing their winning streak. However, some students were left confused about a couple of the calls made during the powderpuff matchup.

Throughout the game, the seniors relied on their teamwork and determination to maintain a lead, though the juniors weren’t far behind. Senior Christian Roman was the offensive coach for the senior team and emphasized trust to be a key factor for the team.

“We wanted to give our players the chance to show their athleticism and speed,” Roman said. “We incorporated a lot of outside plays to give them space to make big plays.”

This year’s game brought lots of energy, competitiveness, and a finish unlike any other. As the clock reached its final minute, anticipation rose, and the juniors scored what they believed to be the game winning touchdown, leading to students rushing onto the field believing the game was over. Moments later the play was called back, and a timeout allowed one final play for the seniors, sparking frustration and questions among juniors who had not understood what occurred. As a last resort, the seniors ran a trick “hook and ladder” play.

“The most exciting moment was definitely the end of the game,” senior Shiloh Adams said. “They called for a replay with just seconds left, the seniors scored again. All of us running to huddle up and cheer together was such a wholesome moment. It showed that even if we don’t know these people one-on-one, we can still be connected and have that shared memory.”

This win was also credited by the seniors’ motivation and pride in tradition.

“I think it came down to us not wanting to be the first ever senior group to lose powderpuff,” Adams said. “When a group of people all have the same passion and strive for an end goal, it really pushes us to work even harder.”

The “hook and ladder” play was also not the only play that led to the win for the seniors, there were a few key plays. The little pitches the seniors ran with their running backs helped swing the momentum and set up impactful drives and bring excitement to the crowd.

A large motivation for some seniors on the team this year was not only in hopes to keep the winning streak going, but to also make memories during their last year.

“I missed out on the experience last year, and hearing about the excitement and memories from my friends who played made me realize that I want to have as many memories from high school as I can,” Adams said.

Even with the outcome, seniors acknowledged that the juniors brought a strong performance.

“Honestly, overall the juniors were really impressive,” Adams said. “They definitely put a whole bunch of effort and practice into the game. They also seemed to have a good connection with their teammates and coaches, which definitely contributed to their work ethic.”

While the end of the powderpuff game left the seniors in celebration and the juniors with heavy hearts at such a close game, the matchup still brought excitement and school spirit.
