For the first time in Plainfield North High School history, the girls now have their own flag football program, symbolizing progress, pride, and new opportunities in Plainfield North athletics.
The team was introduced this fall after growing support for expanding girls’ competitive athletic programs. Across Illinois, more than 200 high schools have started a girls’ flag football program this year, according to Alex Kantecki, sports editor for the Northwest Herald. Students pushed for the program, recognizing the need for more opportunities in competitive sports for young women.
Flag football is more than adding a new sport to the school’s athletic program; it represents a shift toward equality and recognition. Players and coaches say the program highlights school pride while giving girls a chance to compete, a milestone for Plainfield North athletics.
Junior wide receiver and defensive back Riley O’Shea said the team has embraced the challenge of learning a new game. “The practices have been a lot of fun, making new friends and learning a ton about the game of football,” O’Shea said. “There is a lot of strategy that goes into our preparation.”
O’Shea explained that summer camps were the first time many players studied football from a playbook perspective. “Although the learning is an ongoing process, I’m extremely proud of how far the team has come in a short amount of time,” she said. For many players, the sport is completely new.
What stands out most for the team is the excitement on the field. “On game days, I look forward to being on the field and watching or making a great play happen,” O’Shea said. “There’s nothing better than cheering and celebrating with my teammates.”
The program’s launch marks an important milestone for the school and for girls’ athletics. With determination and pride, the team is laying the foundation for future tigers who want to be involved in this new program with great opportunities. Their first season is not just about wins and losses; it is about making history at Plainfield North.
