Do you ever want to help others or make an impact in your community? Red Cross is a club right here at Plainfield North that aims to do just that. With their second semester of meeting approaching, the club aspires to make a difference that goes beyond the classroom.

When students think of Red Cross, they immediately think of saving lives or working with blood, but that’s far from the truth. Instead, Red Cross is an organization with members around the world who help with disasters, veterans, blood drives, and basic safety needs. Their goal is to provide opportunities for students to get involved in the community and learn some leadership skills.

From the organization’s website, the purpose of the Red Cross is to “Prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” Having a strong network of volunteers, donors, and partners helps put the goal of compassion into action. It saves many lives from people affected by disaster across the country, and communities are ready and prepared for disasters. Red Cross allows citizens access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products.

So how does this transfer to Plainfield North? With a school that is all for making an impact, several students have put their heads together to start a chapter here at North: the Red Cross Club. This club is student-led, with opportunities to help serve the community ready for anyone. From blood drives to international war laws, the students cover many topics.

Club Sponsor, Abigail Greetis, commented, “The goal of the club is to educate others on the Red Cross mission and encourage others to get involved with and help our community. Students should feel inspired by the club because it is truly just an altruistic mission, built on extending a helping hand to those in need. In such a digital age, it reminds us of the value in being part of something bigger than our own individual lives.”

This emphasis on altruism is at the core of the club’s mission. By encouraging students to look beyond their daily high school routines, the club helps members realize that even small, selfless actions can ripple out to make a massive difference in someone else’s life.

The club tries to meet every Tuesday or Thursday to help set up missions (events), help veterans, or educate students on the high levels of education Red Cross has to offer. The first meeting is to be determined, but their mission is worthwhile.
